Quirkyalone, arms thrown back

QUIRKYALONE: YES OR NO

From Tom Hanks to Cleopatra

Aimee Mann: Yes. Til Tuesday's "Voices Carry" reminds us to never be silent in a relationship.

Alanis Morissette: Yes. With "You Oughta Know," Alanis makes it clear that hell hath no fury like a quirkyalone scorned.

Ally McBeal: Controversial but yes. The poster child for long walks alone at night.

Alyssa Milano: No.

Angelina Jolie: Yes, but only recently. Especially when she gave the editors of Cosmopolitan this piece of advice for women: "Figure out who you are separate from your family and the man or woman you're in a relationship with. . . I think that's the most important thing in life. Find a sense of self because with that, you can do anything else."

Anne Hutchinson: Yes. A religious rebel who challenged the very basis for the Puritan colony by preaching that God's grace was implanted in every human soul.

Ashton Kutcher: No. He gets the award for most offensively unquirkyalone celebrity. Exploits fake relationships to get publicity in a most obvious way.

Ben Affleck: No.

Bjork: Yes. Often sings about maintaining your own space while you're in a relationship.

Bridget Jones: No. Too concerned about calories. Relationships should be fostered, not festered.

Britney Spears: Tough call. There's something scarily manufactured and artificial about her (it would be hard to call her quirky), but, in these post-Justin Timberlake days, she does seem to be embracing being untethered and open to possibility. In a probing US Weekly article, "Why Isn't Britney Dating?" she says, "It's more exciting when you don't have a boyfriend."

Cher: Yes. (Post-Sonny)

Cleopatra: Yes. Ruled Egypt in her own rather than in the name of her husband.

Courtney Cox: No. Uses relationship with David Arquette to shill Coca-Cola.

Courtney Love: No.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton: Yes. Quirkytogether and also very friend-focused. She collaborated with Susan B. Anthony to advocate for women's suffrage.

Erykah Badu: Yes.

Frances Mcdormand: Yes, plays complex, non-traditional female leads.

Frederick Douglass: Yes. Uncompromising abolitionist.

Freddie Prinze Jr: No.

Jamie Lee Curtis: Yes. Purposely showed off her flabby areas in a photo shoot to show herself as a "real" person.

Janeane Garofalo: Yes!

Joan of Arc: Yes. Followed her inner voice in the face of scorn and ridicule.

Kate Winslet: Yes. Consistently plays female characters on journeys of self-exploration.

Katharine Hepburn: Yes. Introduced an entire new type of female character.

Kramer: Yes.

Janet Reno: Yes.

Laverne and Shirley: Yes. Real and unafraid to show it. Plus friendship is very important to quirkyalones.

Margaret Cho: Yes. She's the one that she wants.

Mary Magdalene: Yes. Who wouldn't hold out for the Messiah?

Mary Wollstonecraft: Yes.

Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks: No! The enemies of quirkyalones everywhere.

Muhammad: No. (Conquerortogether.)

Morrissey: Yes. For those who grew up in the eighties, the prototypical quirkyalone.

Nicole Kidman: Maybe. Often goes to her movie premieres alone, sometimes brings her sister and friends.

Oprah: Of course.

Oscar Wilde: Yes.

Phoebe: Yes.

Ralph Nader: Yes. Obeys his inner voice, even under extreme pressure.

Salma Hayek: Yes.

Sandra Bernard: Yes. Quirkyalone and bisexual. Extra points.

Sarah Jessica Parker: Yes. Has made a career out of playing the misfits and oddballs, starting with brainy, awkward Patty Greene on Square Pegs.

Saicho: Yes. A monk at the age of thirteen, Saicho (767-822) was among the first to make being quirkyalone a required and valued discipline. In order to excel at Saicho's school of Buddhism, monks had to spend at least twelve years in isolation, gaining better knowledge of the self.

Shannon Doherty: No.

Soleil Moon Frye: Yes (as Punky Brewster).

Steve Martin: Yes.

Tina Turner: Yes. Archetypal late-blooming quirkyalone who has been there, done that, and recreated her life from scratch.

Thora Birch: Yes (for Enid in Ghost World)

Queen Latifah: Yes.

Walt Whitman: Yes.

Woody Allen: No. Quirkycreepy.
